Melissa White
About Us

From her studio in Hastings on the Sussex coast of England Melissa designs and hand paints surface pattern for interiors.

Working largely to commission she creates bespoke pieces for domestic, commercial and heritage interiors.

In between commissions she creates off-the-peg artwork which is available from her Studio Shop.

Melissa entered the world of decorative interiors from an unusual direction, specialising in reproducing Elizabethan wall paintings and painted cloths in the tradition of the craftsmen known as "painter stainers". She remains dedicated to this intriguing genre researching and reproducing these rare designs for museums and historic houses.

Meanwhile her inherent love of surface pattern has drawn Melissa towards diverse and ever changing influences for her designs. This open-minded and inquisitive approach to decoration ensures that her bespoke and commissioned work is always original and exciting.

Her signature style has a historic, artisanal and painterly feel. This is often finished by ageing and distressing her paintwork to distance it from the new and the mass produced, adding as she calls it "The patination of time".

In 2007 Melissa became a QEST scholar (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) and was awarded a grant to carry out further research into Elizabethan decoration.

Her involvement with QEST has led to many exciting opportunities, most notably a commission to supply a 10m wide landscape mural for the Queen's summerhouse at Buckingham Palace in 2013. Read about this here
