Mythical Land: A Wallpaper Collaboration with Kit Kemp

In 2016 Melissa was approached by Kit Kemp, co-owner and design director of Firmdale Hotels, to create a bespoke wallpaper for the brand new Whitby Hotel in New York. This is Firmdale's 2nd New York hotel and Melissa has designed a mythical landscape to go in the hotel's two large conference rooms. Part of the brief was to populate the rolling landscape with mythical creatures inspired by from Kit's own designs for Chelsea Textiles.

Hand Painted Chinoiserie Wallpaper

A busy and creative 2016 ended with a bespoke hand painted wallpaper for a magnificent house in nearby Rye. Melissa was asked to interpret the gorgeous green Chinoiserie at Winfield House to suit her client's entrance hall. Melissa painted her design directly onto wide-width wallpaper which was then pasted to the wall.

"ELIZABETHAN DECORATIVE WALL PAINTING: How we patterned our rooms before wallpaper": An illustrated talk by Melissa White

SIT Select Festival
24th May 2015, 2pm
Gallery 2, Museum in the Park, Stratford Park, Stroud GL5

Melissa will be a guest speaker at the SIT SELECT Festival 2015

Melissa dispels the commonly held perception that Tudor houses were all white washed walls and dark beams by revealing fascinating examples of wall paintings and painted cloths from the 16th and 17th centuries. As a decorative artist and designer, Melissa has been studying and reproducing these designs for 18 years with a hands-on approach to understanding how they were produced. In this informal talk she will guide you through this decorative period by showing examples of original designs and how she has incorporated them into her creative practice with projects such as her Arden fabric and wallpaper collection for Zoffany. Melissa will bring samples of the work to enjoy. Tickets: £10

MAKE / CREATE exhibition

6th - 10th May 2015
The Crypt Gallery, St Pancras Church, Euston Road, London, NW1 2BA

For the all new London Craft Week Melissa is taking part in an experimental collaboration with a contemporary artist.

MAKE / CREATE will pair 13 craft scholars from Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) with 13 contemporary artists. Devised by Griffin Gallery the exhibition will take place at the pop-up Crypt Gallery in St Pancras Church, Euston.

"The spirit of the exhibition lies in the desire to demonstrate the contemporary nature of craft, and the craft involved in contemporary art – changing perceptions of both" (Griffin Gallery)

Melissa is collaborating with conceptual artist Chantal Powell on an installation that combines her large Tudor painted cloths with Chantal's theatrical installation pieces. Titled "Veneer" the piece plays on notions of imitation, illusion and deception.

She was one of five artisans from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) selected to transform the Summer House in time for the Festival's Royal Preview day. Here Melissa presented her artwork to H.M. The Queen and TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

The Summer House required artwork for three walls so Melissa painted a series of large rolling landscape canvases drawing inspiration from paintings by John Wootton held by the Royal Collection.

This legacy project will be enjoyed for years to come and highlights the eclectic range of crafts that QEST has supported since it was established by the Royal Warrant Holders Association in 1990.

Here's a short film about the project made by QEST: More images and info on Melissa's blog Read more about QEST and the Summer House refurbishment here
